
The National Book Center (CNL)
The National Book Centre is a public institution run by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication. Its remit is to encourage the creation and distribution of high-quality works of literature by providing support to those involved at all levels of the book industry (writers and translators, publishers, bookshops, libraries, literary event organisers, etc.). It is also a place for professionals from across the industry to meet, network and develop initiatives.
The CNL's missions:
To support and encourage the literary efforts of French writers through grants, zero-interest loans, subsidies, book purchases and any other means;
To promote through subsidies, cash advances or any other means the publication or re-publication by French companies of literary works whose publication is recommended;
To encourage all modes of literary expression and to shortlist for distribution, in all its forms, literary works in the French language;
With the support of publishing companies and bookshops, to contribute to the economic development of the book industry and help maintain and preserve the quality of book distribution and reading networks;
To contribute to the defence and illustration of French language and culture;
To promote the translation of foreign works into French and French works into foreign languages;
To support literary events that are open to the broadest audience possible, enabling writers to meet the public and promoting reading and book sales;
To step up literary exchanges in France and abroad and contribute to all initiatives promoting books and reading that are likely to help broaden the distribution of French books;
To support libraries, cultural institutions and bookshops in France and abroad that order works in French of cultural, scientific or technical interest or that concern the French-speaking world.
